It is the question we get more than any other at the counter in Canton: “What size auger do I need?” The honest answer is that the post is only half of it. Around here, the soil decides as much as the post does — and Cherokee County red clay behaves nothing like the sandy loam the manufacturer’s chart was written for.
Here is how we size augers for fence work in north Georgia, and the mistakes that cost people a weekend.
Start with the three-times rule
If you are setting posts in concrete, the hole should be roughly three times the width of the post. That gives you a concrete collar thick enough to actually resist the leverage a tall fence puts on it. Go narrower and the collar cracks at the first hard wind; go much wider and you are buying concrete you did not need.
Remember that lumber is sold by nominal size, not actual size. A “4×4” is really 3.5 inches across, so three times that is 10.5 inches — which is why a 12-inch auger is the workhorse bit for residential fencing.

Corners, ends and gate posts carry all the load in a fence line. Size those up one step from your line posts — it is cheap insurance, and it is the single upgrade most likely to keep the fence standing in ten years.
Depth: forget the frost line, think leverage
Contractors moving down from the north often over-dig out of habit. Georgia’s frost depth is shallow — a few inches — so frost heave is not what is driving your hole depth here. Leverage is.
The working rule is to bury about one third of the total post length. A 6-foot privacy fence wants an 8-foot post with roughly 2 feet in the ground. Taller fence, deeper hole — the wind load on a solid privacy panel is substantial.
One caveat worth a phone call: if your fence needs a permit, Cherokee County may have its own minimum footing depth, and structural or retaining applications have separate requirements entirely. Check before you dig rather than after.
The red clay problem nobody warns you about
This is the part that separates a good day from a miserable one, and it is specific to soil like ours.
Wet clay packs the flighting. Auger into saturated red clay and the spiral loads up with a solid plug that stops carrying spoil to the surface. The bit keeps turning, the hole stops getting deeper, and you end up pulling the auger every few inches to knock it clean. If you can roll the soil into a ribbon in your hand, it is too wet — give it a couple of dry days.
Wet clay also glazes the hole. The turning bit can burnish the walls into a slick, sealed surface. That glazed wall sheds water and gives your concrete very little to grip. The fix takes thirty seconds: run something down the wall to score it before you pour — a length of rebar or a shovel blade is plenty.
Dry clay is a different fight. In an August drought, Georgia clay sets up close to concrete. Standard dirt teeth will skate on it. This is where a rock bit earns its keep, and where torque matters more than horsepower.
Rock: plan for it in Cherokee County
We sit in the Piedmont, which means weathered rock and granite are a normal find, not a surprise. You may auger twenty holes clean and hit refusal on the twenty-first.
- Dirt teeth handle soil, clay and gravel. They are what most augers ship with.
- Rock teeth are carbide-tipped and shaped to chip rather than scoop. They cut weathered rock and hard dry clay, and they are slower in soft ground.
- A pilot bit keeps the auger centered. A worn one lets the bit wander and dish out an oversized, sloppy hole.
If you are running a long fence line on unfamiliar ground, it is worth having rock teeth on hand rather than losing half a day to a trip back for them.
Match the auger to your machine
A bigger bit is not automatically better. Auger drives are rated by torque and by the hydraulic flow they expect, and an 18-inch bit on an undersized drive will simply stall in clay.
Most standard-flow skid steers land in the 15–25 gpm range, which comfortably runs bits up to about 12 inches in our soil. Larger diameters and hard ground favor a high-flow machine or a higher-torque planetary drive. When in doubt, tell us your machine’s make, model and flow rating and we will match the drive for you — it takes a minute and it is the difference between digging and stalling.
Four mistakes we see every season
- Digging the day after a hard rain. Clay at its worst. Wait for it to dry to moist.
- Sizing every post the same. Corners and gates need more hole than line posts.
- Forcing a stalling bit. If it is not cutting, you need different teeth or more torque, not more down pressure.
- Skipping the 811 call. Georgia 811 is free and required. Call before you dig, every time.
The short version
For most residential fence work in Cherokee County: a 12-inch auger with dirt teeth, dug 24 to 30 inches deep, in soil that is moist rather than soaked. Step up to 18 inches for gate and corner posts, and keep rock teeth within reach.
